Rotary Youth Transition Seminar with Georgia and Varsha

We were delighted to host two outstanding young ladies from RYTS recently - Georgia Barnes and Varsha Raghavan.

As one of Rotary’s many youth programs Rotary Youth Transition Seminar (RYTS) is a launch pad for young people. It is a week-long residential camp aimed at high school leavers to help equip them with helpful life skills for the wider world.

Georgia & Varsha spoke about their experiences attending the RYTS camp in 2019 and how much they enjoyed the lessons they learnt and the friendships they made.

It turned out that the Rotary Club of Salisbury sponsored Georgia to attend RYTS in 2019 and it was special for both Georgia and club members to hear from her experience.

In fact, one of our members even revealed Georgia’s application letter from 2019 to our club!

Georgia and Varsha were so grateful to the Rotary clubs that sponsored them, that they’re committed to giving back to Rotary.

Gift Hampers for QE II Staff

Members of the Rotary Club of Salisbury rallied together upon hearing guest speaker, Lorraine Munn from the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee (QEII) Hospital, share her story at a club meeting earlier this year. Hearing hospital employees stretched from pillar to post with Covid-19 wards with no time for themselves, club members unanimously decided to put together a care package for the hospital staff.

It is hard to be unaffected by what is unfolding in the world around us, and is a reminder of the importance of community in times of adversity. This is why members of the Rotary Club of Salisbury rallied together upon hearing guest speaker, Lorraine Munn from the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee (QEII) Hospital, share her story at a club meeting earlier this year. Hearing hospital employees stretched from pillar to post with Covid-19 wards with no time for themselves, club members unanimously decided to put together a care package for the hospital staff.

The fundraising effort was spruiked on social media via a GoFundme account promoted by local businesses and councillors alike. The community was only too happy to respond with donations. Serendipitously, at the $800 mark, another guest speaker at the club’s meeting, a local Bunnings Community Organiser, Rhiannon Howard shared that the organisation was always on the lookout for community projects. Upon hearing about our fundraiser for the QEII Hospital, Bunnings Rocklea donated the final $200 required for the care package.

From there, the club assembled a gift basket of delectable treats and presented them to the staff at QEII Hospital. Needless to say, the hospital staff were surprised and appreciative of the support from the club and the community. We have shared their thanks on the club’s Facebook page and look forward to the hospital coordinator returning as a guest speaker later in the year.

Serve to Change Lives

July is not only the start of the new financial year but also a new Rotary year.  Each year the Rotary International President chooses a theme which envisions a new Rotary chapter and this years (21-22) is 'Serve to Change Lives'.  The underpinning philosophy of this theme is about thinking of others before thinking of yourself. By helping and changing the lives of others we change our own lives in the process.   The current RI President Shekar Mehta states 'To live for others, to care for others, to serve others and change their lives is the best way to live our own lives. Just as Albert Einstein said, “Only a life lived for others is a life worthwhile”'.

Saving lives in Ghana

What is it like taking a large team to Africa?  It has probably been one of the most rewarding experiences in my life. In mid February, I began leading Rotary members from all over the East Coast of the United States through Ghana. I’ve tried to give the team a warm Ghanaian welcome like I’ve received on my earlier trips. A large trip is a real blessing because each person sees Ghana and our work in a different way.

India celebrates three years without polio

Throughout India and around the world, Rotary clubs are celebrating a major milestone: India has gone three years without a new case of polio. The last reported case was a two-year-old girl in West Bengal on 13 January 2011. To mark this historic triumph, Rotary clubs illuminated landmarks and iconic structures throughout the country with four simple but powerful words, "India is polio free."
