President Allan's Message

UNITE FOR GOOD
through Membership

As we know, August is Membership month on the RI calendar. I think that we all fall into the trap of not really taking notice of what is happening around us. Every year RI Presidents, District Governors, and YES even Club Presidents talk the membership message. In doing so, we are told there are 1.2 million members in Rotary and perhaps that large number , while giving a warm fuzzy feeling, lulls us into a false sense of security.

The Eastman Kodak Company was incorporated in 1892 and grew into the largest producer of film and cameras in the world. Kodak became synonymous with cameras and capturing memories, remember the phrase 'that Kodak moment". It became a common phrase in our language, everyone knew the name Kodak.  However, in 2013 the company filed for bankruptcy. Kodak failed to appreciate the coming of the digital age, although it invented the first digital camera.

They just didn't correctly read the community signals and changes in the world around them, believing the world still needed film and analogue cameras - the world still needed Kodak.

I do not believe we are having a BAD kodak moment, yet! We still have an active and committed membership base and rebuilding is achievable. Two is a powerful number and we have the potential of seeing that in action. We twelve can become 24 .. 48 .. 96, that is, if we can all add one member, then we can double our numbers. However, it is going to take courage, commitment, inspiration and a PLAN.

Every plan must include milestones - measurables and timeframes. Without these, we cannot measure our successes or recognise our failures. It is up to us alone to turn a potential BAD kodak moment into beautiful kodak moments as we move through the 2025-2026 Rotary year.

Let us all strive to bring one name forward for the October 14 information night. Not believing for a moment that we will achieve a magic doubling of our membership on that night, but with all projects, that hardest part is making a start. Once the ball is rolling, it will gain it's own momentum.

In 2025-2026, let's strive to

Unite for good for Rotary,
Unite for good for our Club
and
Unite for good for our Community.

While we are rebuilding, our caterer is having difficulty catering for our small numbers. Ace has agreed to provide meals for one meeting a month at which we will pay for a minimum number.

Larry A. Lunsford selected to be 2027-28 Rotary International president

Larry A. Lunsford, a member of the Rotary Club of Kansas City-Plaza, Missouri, USA, is the selection of the nominating committee to become Rotary International’s president for 2027-28. He will officially become the president-nominee on 15 September if no other candidates challenge him.

Lunsford attended Truman State University in Kirksville, Missouri, on an academic scholarship, earning bachelor’s and master’s degrees in accounting.

He first encountered Rotary when he received a Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholarship to spend the 1981-82 academic year at the University of Newcastle in Australia.

President Elect Sangkoo Yun resigns

It was with a heavy heart that RI President Francesco Arezzo shared the news of the resignation of President-elect SangKoo Yun. In a message to Rotary leaders, Francesco wrote the following:

"As you may recall, last April, President-elect SangKoo Yun informed us all of his diagnosis of pancreatic cancer and his decision to step back from Rotary responsibilities so he could focus on his treatment. Today, President-elect SangKoo notified me in a letter that he has decided to resign as President-elect of Rotary International after extensive consultation with his doctors."

August is Membership Month

The Top 10 Reasons Why You Should Join / Remain in Rotary

  1. Friendship:

In an increasingly complex world, Rotary provides one of the most basic human needs: the need for friendship and fellowship. It is one of two reasons why Rotary began in 1905.
  1. Business Development:

The second original reason for Rotary's beginning is business development. Everyone needs to network. Rotary consists of a cross section of every business community. Its members come from all walks of life. Rotarians help each other and collectively help others.
  1. Personal Growth and Development:

Membership in Rotary continues one’s growth and education in human relations and personal development.

  1. Fun:

Rotary is fun, a lot of fun. Each meeting is fun. The club projects are fun. Social activities are fun. The service is fun.
  1. Citizenship in the World:

Every Rotarian wears a pin that says “Rotary International.” There are few places on the globe that do not have a Rotary club. Every Rotarian is welcome – even encouraged – to attend any of the thousands of clubs across the globe.
  1. The Development of Ethics:

Rotarians practice a 4-Way Test that governs one’s ethical standards. Rotarians are expected to be ethical in business and personal relationships.
  1. Cultural Awareness:

Around the world, practically every religion, country, culture, race, creed, political persuasion, language, color, and ethnic identity is found in Rotary. It is a cross section of the world’s most prominent citizens from every background. Rotarians become aware of their cultures and learn to love and work with people everywhere.  We embrace diversity.
  1. Nice People:

Rotarians above all are nice people - the nicest people on the face of the earth. They are important people who follow the policy of it is nice to be important but it is important to be nice.
  1. The Absence of an “Official Creed”:

Rotary has no secret handshake, no secret policy, no official creed, no secret meeting or rituals. It is an open society of men and women who simply believe in helping and serving others.
  1. The Opportunity to Serve:

Past RI President Sir Clem Renouf said it best "Rotary takes ordinary men (and women) and gives them extraordinary opportunities to do more with heir lives than they ever dreamed possible"
