The phrase "Service Above Self" is the principal motto of Rotary International,
established to convey the philosophy of unselfish volunteer service.
It emphasizes the importance of selflessness, encouraging individuals to
prioritize the needs of others and their community over personal interests.
This motto reflects the ideal of service as a foundation for worthy endeavors,
promoting a culture of helping others and fostering community engagement.
Ultimately, it signifies a commitment to leaving personal egos aside and
focusing on what is best for those being served.
In 2025-2026, let's strive to
Unite for good for Rotary,
Unite for good for our Club
and
Unite for good for our Community.

Guest Speaker
Peter Cox, Village Avenue Community Church
Peter is the Community Director of the Village Avenue Community Church whose mission is to supply food and support to the homeless people in the area. Peter commented that the increasing costs of accommodation is contributing to the increasing homelessness in the area. By way of example, he told us that the accommodation in the Coopers Plains, Salisbury & Tarragindi suburbs range from $605 to $700 per week. Presently, 90% of the people the Village sees cannot afford to pay their rent.
The Village Avenue Community Church provides showers, emergency food as well as a community 3 course lunch every Thursday. The Thursday lunch provides for 40 people each week.
The actions of the Village is supported by money from service clubs, church community and businesses. ALDI and Coles partner with food who provide approximately $100K worth of support at a fraction of the cost.
The Village works closely with St David's and were recipients of the 10 sleeping bags we purchased last year, currently three have been donated to the homeless. On December 18, the Village will be providing a Christmas Lunch. Peter is asking for volunteers to serve as waiters.
Robyn Frandsen, PROBUS Club of Moorooka
Robyn joined us to thank the Club for our support at their recent first anniversary. She reported they had an enjoyable celebration with 40 attendees. She also issued an open invitation to our members to join them at their Christmas Party which will be held at the Bundamda TAFE College on November 26. Please advise Robyn if you intend to attend.

From vastly different countries and cultures, the first fellows at Rotary’s Istanbul peace center unite around a shared purpose
Rotary’s new peace fellows converged on Istanbul’s Bahçeşehir University from countries thousands of miles apart: Egypt, Bulgaria, Kenya, Jordan, and beyond. But they lost no time in finding out what they had in common.
“Where else on Earth would I have met with an Israeli participant and sat and talked and debated and laughed together?” says Suaad Abdo, a Yemeni fellow who now lives in Germany. “Having different opinions can enrich our discussions and expand our horizons.”
Abdo is one of 13 fellows in the first class at Rotary’s most recently opened peace center, the Otto and Fran Walter Rotary Peace Center at Bahçeşehir. Over the course of their yearlong professional development certificate program, which they began in February, the fellows are learning the theory and practice of sustainable peace, conflict resolution, and diplomacy. After 10 weeks studying together at the center, they returned home to carry out social change initiatives they designed.
Rotary ambassadors are artists, musicians, actors, and humanitarians who support Rotary’s work across all our main causes to create lasting change. They promote our vision of a world where people unite and take action by expanding our reach to new audiences, helping people understand who we are and what we do, and raising awareness of Rotary around the world. Through events, advocacy, media, and more, Rotary ambassadors engage with members and supporters to amplify our vision and impact.

“I had the incredible opportunity to travel to Uganda with Rotary and see their work firsthand. Witnessing their dedication to helping refugees and their unwavering commitment to peace left a lasting impact on me. Rotary members show respect for those displaced, empowering them through education, job training, and more, helping to create the conditions for stable, sustainable, and peaceful communities. As a Rotary ambassador, I will enthusiastically help to amplify their message of hope and resilience.”
