Rotary International recognises August as Membership Month. In the Rotary International calendar, August is perhaps the most appropriate month to focus on membership. Every Club has just negotiated their changeover, and the new President and Board turn to the new year full of enthusiasm, what better way to start a new Rotary Year than to make Membership the focus.
Our Club is no different.
We are starting from a low base, but other Clubs have started with fewer members and succeeded in building their numbers. Traditionally, membership has been grown by personal individual invitations to join. Think about by whom, and how you were invited to join Salisbury.
We have spoken about a campaign to introduce the businesses along the Evans Road corridor to Rotary via the Corporate Membership opportunity, but let's not forget how we were introduced into Rotary. The personal connection is still the most powerful tool in our arsenal.
At our next meeting, we will be focusing on our membership development strategy. Let us all bring along one name of a potential member whether it be family, friend, doctor, dentist, motor mechanic, pharmacist, plumber, solicitor or accountant. We can take those names and together with the corporates, plan a Membership Information night for the first meeting in October.
I hate to be the doomsayer in the group, but if we don't get the ball rolling, it will be deflated, and we will have nothing to save.
Rember the words of Past RI President Stephanie.
‘We have endured and strengthened because we adhere to our mission and to our values. In times like these, we are once again reminded of the strength of Rotary and the importance of supporting our organization’
Let's make these words our mantra as we:
Unite for good for Rotary,
Unite for good for our Club
and
Unite for good for our Community.
Allan James
President
Rotary Club of Salisbury
Last Meeting
Our guest at the last meeting was Alice Langford from the South West Chamber of Commerce. The Chamber meets at South Sports Club, Acacia Ridge for a breakfast meeting.
The South West Chamber has been operating for over 20 years and has a database that exceeds 800 members.
The South West Chamber has a relationship with the Rotary Club of Woolloongabba and enjoyed a relationship with our Club in the past.
Over the years, the Chamber has met in Salisbury, at the Greek Club, the Tennis Center, Archerfield Aero Club and now at South Sports Club.
Currently the Chamber is running a 'Well Being' program for its members. This grew out of the increase of anti-social behaviour experienced by many of the businesses.
The Chamber meets bi-monthly for breakfast. Alice told us 'breakfast meetings suit the majority of members'. At their breakfast meetings they have a normal attendance of between 60-100 people.
The Rotary Club of Salisbury was invited to become a 'Community Partner' of the Chamber and we will be recognised as such on their new website.

Meet the Rotary International Ambassadors
Rotary Ambassadors
Rotary ambassadors are artists, musicians, actors, and humanitarians who support Rotary’s work across all our main causes to create lasting change. They promote our vision of a world where people unite and take action by expanding our reach to new audiences, helping people understand who we are and what we do, and raising awareness of Rotary around the world. Through events, advocacy, media, and more, Rotary ambassadors engage with members and supporters to amplify our vision and impact.
Rotary and the Gates Foundation are renewing their longstanding partnership to end polio, announcing a joint commitment of up to US$450 million to support the global polio eradication effort at the annual Rotary International Convention.
“While historic progress has been made toward defeating polio—90 percent of the world’s population is free from the wild poliovirus—we’re facing significant challenges from competing financial priorities to fragile health systems. Furthermore, the detection of polio in places like Papua New Guinea that were previously polio free demonstrates that polio anywhere is a threat everywhere,” said Rotary International PolioPlus Committee Chair Mike McGovern. “The extension of our fundraising partnership with the Gates Foundation allows us to reach children around the world with lifesaving vaccines, keeping every child and community safe from this preventable disease.”
Rotary will continue to raise $50 million per year, with every dollar to be matched with two additional dollars from the Gates Foundation. This renewed agreement will translate into up to a total of $450 million to support the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI).
