ZOOM MEETING: Guest Speaker AG Craig Carson

Our guest speaker this week will be Assistant Governor Craig Carson (Dochterman Cluster) from the The Rotary Club of Brisbane Centenary.

Craig will be talking about Rotarians Against Malaria Australia (RAM). RAM is an Australian registered charity, and we’re part of the Rotary Australia World Community Service. RAM supports projects that aim to control and ultimately eliminate malaria. They work with government health programs in our partner countries, and follow the recommended WHO guidelines on the best strategies for control and elimination.

Most of the projects they support are in the area of vector control ie reducing the mosquito population and the opportunity for mosquitos to bite humans and thus spread the malaria parasite.  Craig will be giving an exciting overview about this great Rotary Community Service.

Last Week: Melody Matheson

Melody spoke about the Salisbury area and the property market. With the medium house price of around $1,000.000 it is becoming impossible for first time buyers to enter the market. There is limited stock in the Salisbury as properties are in high demand. The demographic has changed with more young families replacing the post war families.

Rotary has been working to eradicate polio for more than 35 years. Our goal of ridding the world of this disease is closer than ever. As a founding partner of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, we've reduced polio cases by 99.9 percent since our first project to vaccinate children in the Philippines in 1979.

Rotary members have contributed more than $2.1 billion and countless volunteer hours to protect nearly 3 billion children in 122 countries from this paralyzing disease. Rotary’s advocacy efforts have played a role in decisions by governments to contribute more than $10 billion to the effort.

Today, polio remains endemic only in Afghanistan and Pakistan. But it’s crucial to continue working to keep other countries polio-free. If all eradication efforts stopped today, within 10 years, polio could paralyze as many as 200,000 children each year.
